Hannibal composer Brian Reitzell uses so many instruments to create the wall-to-wall score of each episode, sometimes he can’t keep them all straight. “I bought some things in Morocco. I’m not even sure what they’re called,” he says. “One has horsehair strings on it, you bow it, and it has a goatskin head like a drum as its resonating body. Flying out of Tangiers was really tricky,” says Reitzell, “It looked like I was carrying a bow and arrow onto the plane.”

With Hannibal’s third season starting tonight on NBC, Reitzell was kind enough to show photographer Amanda Demme a few of the more peculiar selections from his massive collection---which you can examine in further detail below, along with clips of how they sound.
