This is one of the best map themes I've seen in a while. Designer (and neurobiologist) Eleanor Lutz took inspiration from her "favorite post-apocalyptic worlds" including those depicted in Battlestar Galactica, Starcraft and The Matrix to build this beautiful style in Mapbox. Lutz named the theme Space Station Earth and gave oceans and other bodies of water the look of a starry galaxy. Use the interactive fullscreen map to re-imagine your city as a colony, somewhere out in space.

"My favorite part about making this map was adding oversized markers for stores, parks, and other points of interest to simulate city lights," Lutz wrote in a blog post for Mapbox where she is a consulting designer. "I lowered the contrast for landmasses and buildings to highlight the lights and the galaxy ‘ocean.’"

Lutz added depth to her map with custom textures for buildings, roads and landmass-ocean boundaries using free textures from Lost and Taken to build pseudo-3-D edges and steel plates.
