Moon as Art: Help NASA Choose the Most Beautiful Lunar Image

For five years, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been circling the moon collecting all sorts of data and producing lots of great images. To celebrate the anniversary of the mission’s launch on June 18, 2009, NASA is putting together a collection of the orbiter’s best images.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter uses a laser altimeter to bounce laser pulses off the surface of the Moon and back to measure distance. The colors in this image indicate slope: Blues are more gentle slopes and reds are steeper.
